On October 1st, despite an uncertain situation, a small but motivated group of students, professors, and researchers gathered in Jerusalem for the 2025-2026 academic year of the French Biblical and Archaeological School. Once again this year, we continue our mission at the intersection of reason and faith, serving all, with flexibility and perseverance. Rescue of the ÉBAF Archaeological Reserve in Gaza
Housing objects from excavations conducted by the École Biblique over the past three decades, the repository located in the heart of Gaza City had to be urgently evacuated.
On the morning of September 10, following the Israeli armed forces’ announcement of the imminent destruction of the tower housing the repository, the École Biblique’s management, in conjunction with Première Urgency Internationale, UNESCO, and the French authorities, initiated an emergency evacuation.
After extensive negotiations and the intervention of various partners at the highest levels, it was ultimately thanks to the assistance of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and the Parish of the Holy Family, the only Catholic church in the Gaza Strip, that a logistical solution was found.
The ÉBAF thanks those who, both locally and abroad, intervened to save this common heritage of humanity.
